Plan a family meal together. What will you make? 1. Create a menu and a shopping list. (Older children can write the list and estimate how much they think each item will cost.) 2. 🛒 Go to the store together or pull things from your cupboard. Talk about how you select the right ingredients and have older children keep track of the cost of items as you add them to your shopping cart or put them on the counter. (It is a great opportunity to estimate and round to the nearest dollar.) 3. 💲 Calculate the total cost of the meal and then talk about how you would calculate the cost per person. 4. 🍳 Make your meal together. 5. Tap the green add button. 6. Take a photo of your family planning, shopping or cooking. 7. Tap the mic to tell us about your meal and how you used math and Japanese together. Record yourself saying "Itadakimasu" which is the greeting we say before we eat a meal. Record yourself saying "gochi sou sama" which is the greeting we say after we finish a meal as a thankyou. 8. Tap the green check to add to your journal. Why: Meal planning is a life skill. Children get hands-on writing, listening, problem-solving, math and collaboration practice. Send your feedback on this activity and tell me what else you would like to cook in Japanese!
