Banksy- There is Always Hope **Social Issues in Art**

Banksy is a modern, and anonymous, England-based street artist and political activist. His most famous mural is “Girl with Balloon.” Banksy’s “Girl with Balloon” became his highest paid work, which sold at auction. During the live auction, Banksy’s work began to self-destruct and shred! Banksy built a shredder into the frame of the work. It is the first live artwork at an auction, and is considered to be more valuable now that it has been shredded. Look at the Keynote of Banksy provided below. Think about the symbolism of the balloon. Is the child letting the balloon go on purpose? Did she give the balloon as a gift to the world? Is there hope that she might catch the balloon? In the midst of everything, like the balloon, we have had to give up so much, to stay safe and properly social distance. Kids are out of school. Restaurants are closed. People are home. Yet despite all of it, we still have hope. Banksy writes on his mural, “There is always hope.” What gives you hope? Your family? Doctors and health care workers? Think about something that gives you hope. Directions: -Use the template below, or create your own. Design a mural of hope. Design a mural that shows encouragement.
