(A8) Identifying Manatees: Scar Observation

Grades: 2nd Grade, 4th Grade, 3rd Grade
Subjects: Science

Student Instructions

Scientists use scars to identify manatees. Scientists draw and photograph the unique pattern of scars and mutilations on a manatee's trunk and tail fluke to identify manatees over time. In Florida, the scars are primarily a result of encounters with boats; however, entanglements in fishing gear, cold stress lesions, and fungal infections also can cause scarring. 1. Click add to open the template. 2. Observe manatee A on the screen. 3. Draw the scars that you see. 4. Look at the scar sheet. Circle your prediction with the green pen. 5. Repeat for manatees B - F. 6. Go back to A. Circle the correct answer with the blue pen. 7. Repeat for manatees B - F. 8. Move to slide 7. Fill in the chart. 9. Use the mic to record an analysis of your success identifying manatees. 10. Click the green check to save.
