Teacher Notes (not visible to students)

This activity uses a short story video to teach the be-verbs am, is, are, was, and were. Use the video as the shared read-aloud. After watching, students respond to an open prompt, complete drag-and-drop items to show verb choice, and create a short product showing their learning. Minimal prep is required: a device to play the video and simple drawing or recording tools for children. For the open-ended questions, high-quality answers show the student names one correct be-verb in a sentence and/or asks a clear question about the verbs. Examples of strong responses: a child records "I am happy" or draws a picture and says "He was sad yesterday." For the show-and-tell creative prompt, look for responses that correctly use at least one be-verb in speech or drawing. Teachers should mark these open responses as correct if the student uses a be-verb appropriately for the subject and time frame, or shows understanding through drawing plus explanation.
