Making an inference involves using what you know to make a guess about what you don't know, or reading between the lines. Readers who make inferences use the clues in the text along with their own experiences to help them figure out what is not directly said, making the text personal and memorable.

The teaching of inference skills is extremely important to our students. It is a higher order skill that is essential for students to develop to in order for them to access to the deepest levels of comprehension. The usefulness of this skill transcends the walls of the classroom.
