Full page text features for Non Fiction Texts This activity is intended to be completed over a series of lessons/days. Here is one way to use this resource, feel free to change it up and use how you would like though! Choose any non fiction text that your class would be interested in. Make sure that it has a title page, table of contents, index and glossary. This is your example I recommend have a wide variety of Non Fiction texts for students to look through to find the relevant pages. As an extension students could record themselves reading the contents of any of these pages or explain how the page works. Day 1 - As a class identify what information is on a title page: title, author, illustrator sometimes an image and publishing information. Students then complete page one of this activity. Extension - assign a KWL chart ( I have one that matches) and have students complete the K and W sections according to your example non fiction book. Day 2 - As a class identify what is on a table of contents and how it helps a reader. Names of the chapters, pages numbers etc. Complete page two allowing students to find their own examples. Day 3 - Create a scenario where you want to find a specific piece of information but you need it quickly (chance for some serious dramatics!) Explain how the index can help you find information about specific things quickly. Allow students to explore index's and complete page 3 Day 4 - Read a page in the text that has a word above most students vocabulary (make sure it is in the glossary of your text prior) Again another chance for some dramatics here not knowing what a word means and discovering how the glossary helps you become a better reader. Day 5 - If you did the KWL chart complete the L section. I hope you enjoy this activity! I will also add a similar one that focuses on text features found within text and visual features.
