Discovering Layers of Earth - Evidence of the Past

Grades: 6th Grade, 4th Grade, 5th Grade
Subjects: Science

Student Instructions

You are Paleontologists! And Archaeologists! And Geologists! Students are to work as a group to slowly and carefully dig through the layers of earth in their model. We have a model of layers of the earth in our classroom. You are going to work as a team to unearth fossils and more. You will use these items to help you identify time periods the layers represent. With each layer discovery, you are to take a picture and post it into this See Saw document. Label items you found. You may need to label later if you have trouble finding names of items. Once finished, post to your SeeSaw account.

Teacher Notes (not visible to students)

Teachers needs to create a model of layers of the Earth with different fossils, arrow heads, rock, etc placed in manner that is “time era” appropriate. Students will then discover layer by layer, and try to use what they find to identify potential eras of time the layer existed.
