Mindful Recess: Outdoor Sound Hunt

Grades: Other
Subjects: Art, Character Building

Student Instructions

An Outdoor Sound Hunt is exactly what it sounds like: you walk or sit outside, stay quiet, and try to “hunt” or notice all the different sounds you hear. This mindfulness activity will help you tap into your sense of hearing, becoming present and noticing your environment through your ears. 1. Walk, hike or sit, outside in nature. 2. Settle down by taking a few deep breaths. Try a 3-5 breath! (In for three counts, and out for five). 3. Stay quiet until you hear three different sounds, raising a finger for each one. 4. Optional: Bring a pad of paper and some drawing tools with you and create a map of where you hear each sound. You can do this walking or sitting. 5. When you're finished finding your sounds, click add to complete your Mindful Journal page and share what you heard! You can use any of the tools available to you, including the label, mic, video, and drawing tools! 6. Make sure to complete both pages and then click the check to submit!
