Instructions for Pupils

The Métis are Indigenous Peoples who originated in Western Canada. One way they express their culture is through beadwork. Artist Christi Belcourt uses her people's beadwork to inspire her paintings. We will create a digital and acrylic version of beadwork flowers. 1) Use the drawing tools to colour the background colours. 2) Use the pen to add the dots (beads to the flowers). *Tip: consider what size of dot you are adding. 3) When you finish the templates you can draw your own! 4) Click the check when finished.

Teacher Notes (not visible to pupils)

This is a 2 part lesson that requires some content instruction. You will need to teach your students about the Métis people and artist Christi Belcourt prior to the lessons. The first art project is creating a digital beadwork flower and the second is creating the painted version. We printed both off and cut them out and then displayed them on a buffalo in the style of Christi Belcourt's art. Saskatchewan Standards: CH1.2 Identify traditional arts expressions of First Nations and Métis artists. CP1.8 Create art works that express own ideas and explore different forms (e.g., painting, drawing, printmaking) and media (paint, found objects).
