WIN: Create Your Own Newspaper

Grades: 3rd Grade
Subjects: English Language Arts

Student Instructions

You will be the writer, designer, and editor of your own newspaper. We know newspapers contain a variety of articles/stories with a variety of author's purposes: to persuade, inform, and even entertain (comics). You have been hired to write 5 unique genre pieces: 1) personal narrative (a story about a personal experience of yours in the past) 2) expository (informational teaching your writer about a specific topic) 3) argumentative (writing where you share your opinion with others in a way to try and persuade them to feel the same way) 4) friendly or thank you letter (could be written for a variety of purposes) 5) poem (creative expression to produce an image with words rather than illustrations) Please get a graphic organizer to plan out each piece, brainstorm it in your head, and then begin getting it all down on paper as your rough draft. Please revise and edit your own piece then ask a peer to do the same for you (as we know no one is perfect and EVERYONE -- even published authors -- can benefit from suggestions and feedback from peers to make our writing better). When you have completed all five pieces and have had them all revised and edited by yourself and a peer, you will install Canva on your iPad to design your final copy in newspaper format. Please feel free to jazz it up with color/design/fonts, etc to get the attention of your reader. Please post your drafts and final newspaper copy here as a way of showcasing your hard work!
