Teacher Notes (not visible to students)

This activity uses a short informational passage about travel around Cape Horn during the 1850s. Students practice reading aloud for fluency, answer three types of auto-graded comprehension questions, and complete two open-ended tasks (written and multimedia). Use the reading fluency recording to check pacing, accuracy, and expression; Seesaw will provide automatic scoring that teachers should review for correctness and listen to recordings when needed. For the paragraph open response, a high-quality answer explains the main idea (why the route was used despite hardships) and supports it with two details from the passage (distance, overcrowding, food/water issues, or severe weather). For the multimedia response, look for a clear spoken explanation that connects details from the passage to the student’s idea (for example, describing what life on the ship was like and why travelers accepted the risks). Teachers may mark open-ended responses as correct or incorrect based on whether students include the required main idea and supporting details.
