(A10) Levitate and Defy Gravity

Grades: 3rd Grade, 5th Grade, 4th Grade
Subjects: STEAM, Science

Student Instructions

Gravity is a force that pulls objects toward Earth. Defy means to go against. Magnetic attraction is a force that makes some things move toward a magnet. A magnetic object will only attract to a magnet when it is in the magnet’s magnetic field. A magnetic object can defy gravity by levitating in the air. Hands-on Activity 1. Hold a paperclip in your hand. Drop the paperclip. What happens? Why? 2. Repeat and take a 10-second video. 3. Build the pictured system by using a water bottle, 2 neodymium magnets, a paperclip, string, and tape. 4. Levitate the magnetic paperclip. Take a short video of it levitating. Take a photo of the paperclip levitating. 5. Move the paperclip around. When does it levitate? 6. Go to Seesaw Activity #10: Levitate and Defy Gravity. Click Add. Select camera roll. 7. Upload your video of the paperclip falling to the table to slide 1. Record an explanation in the caption. 8. Upload your photo and video of the paperclip levitating to slide 2. Record an explanation in the caption. 9. Record the purpose of the activity. 10. Click the green check to save. Required Content o What happens when you drop a paperclip? (video of gravity pulling paperclip to table) o What happens when the paperclip is in the magnet’s magnetic field? (video of paperclip levitating) o How does the paperclip defy gravity? (photo of paperclip levitating) o Purpose of the activity/what you learned Required Vocabulary o Magnetic Attraction o Magnetic Field o Levitate o Investigate o Defy Gravity
