Grades: 5th Grade, 4th Grade, 3rd Grade
Subjects: STEAM, Science

Student Instructions

You are going to work with a partner to design and build a K'NEX race car. You will race cars down an inclined plane (ramp). Gravity is the force that will pull the cars down the ramp. Friction is a force that slows cars down. You want to reduce as much friction as possible. 1. Build a K'NEX car. Take a picture of your car. 2. Put your car at the top of the inclined plane (ramp). The back wheels should be touching the top of the ramp. Release the car. Do not push. Gravity is the only force that should pull your car down the ramp. 3. Using 1 iPad, take a short video of your car rolling down the inclined plane. 4. Measure the distance your car rolls in centimeters. Write the distance on your data table. 5. Repeat 2 more times. 6. Use Shadow Puppet to create a 1-minute video about your car. Include a picture of your car, the test, and the distance it rolls. Use gravity and friction to explain this activity.
