DIY Pinecone Bird Feeder

Grades: Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1st Grade
Subjects: Science

Student Instructions

Collect the materials: pinecone, birdseed, cotton string, shortening or peanut butter, craft stick or spoon Tie the string securely around the end of the pinecone Using the craft stick, cover the pinecone with shortening- be generous so the birdseed will stick Pour birdseed into a container or paper plate (this part is messy) Roll and pat the birdseed into the shortening on the pinecone Tie the string to a tree for the birds to enjoy Don't be surprised to see a squirrel eating the seeds or taking off with the entire bird feeder, it happens regularly. Take a photo and post it on the template of your bird feeder hanging outside. Did you see any birds or squirrels enjoying the seeds? Tell me about it.
