Student Instructions

A fluency drill should be read three or more times in order for a student to experience fluent (fast and accurate) reading. Fluency must be built from the ground up, and the first step is to develop efficient and accurate retrieval of sounds, then words and finally passages. Repeated readings of the same text are necessary to increase the total amount of text read while decreasing errors. Set a timer for 1 minute and have your child read the page aloud to themselves while pointing at each letter. At the end of one minute, mark where your child stopped on the page with either a 1, 2 or 3. Repeat the activity for one minute at least three times. If time permits, continue until time and errors plateau. The total number of items read should be recorded at the bottom along with the date. You can watch the example of Miss Meidinger doing it.
