Second Grade Growth Spurt, Session 5 When we are reading our stories in guided reading or during read-aloud we stop often and retell to keep track of what is happening in the story. This is what good readers do, especially at the beginning of a longer chapter book that you already started. Today you will check in and make sure that as you are reading more and reading for longer stretches of time, that you are also stopping to make sense of your reading. You will want to pause occasionally and think, “What has happened so far? Can I retell?” Readers who find that they are not sure what has happened will want to reread and try retelling again. This will help you keep tabs on the understanding of the stories you are reading.
