Invasive Species (Chinese Tallow Tree)

Grades: 8th Grade
Subjects: Science

Student Instructions

Part 1. Please read the article Texas Invasive Species: A Growing Problem. Part 2. Let’s say that the Chinese tallow tree is highly competitive with trees that produce fruits and nuts (pecans/acorns). The following graph represents the population of fruit and nut trees after the introduction of the Chinese tallow tree into an environment. Keep in mind the Chinese tallow tree is an invasive species. If a squirrel population is dependent on fruit and nut trees and is unable to eat from the Chinese tallow tree, predict the graph of the squirrel population over time. Use the template provided. Then, write a small paragraph on why your graph looks like it does (4 complete sentences). After reading complete the graph to display your predict. Explain your reasoning.
