Social distancing and the stay-at-home order are essential to help fight the spread of COVID-19, but it has had a huge impact on the mental health affecting seniors living in independent and assisted living facilities. Seniors have not been allowed to have regular contact with family or friends for some time now, because these facilities remain closed to visitors. Start a Pen Pals for Seniors by inviting your students to send encouraging and friendly notes, as well as poems, drawings, and stories to seniors who might be happy to read something from a friendly pen. This would make a great way to show students how to have "Acts of Service" and give back to their community. The project also gives students the opportunity to practice their writing and artistic skills. You can find local senior citizens organizations, community organizations in your areas who would love to received the letters from your students.
