Teacher Notes (not visible to students)

This activity practices recognizing and using the prefixes in- and im- to mean "not." Use it after instruction and modeling of how prefixes change word meaning. Prep: print or display the pages, and make drawing or voice-recording tools available for students. For partner work, pair a reader with a recorder so one student reads words aloud while the partner draws or records meaning. Open-ended grading: For the first Show It prompt, a high-quality answer will clearly show a base word and its prefixed form and include a drawing or short spoken explanation that shows the opposite meaning (e.g., draw a visible and invisible object and say which is which). For the second Show It prompt, a high-quality answer will use voice or drawing to explain how the prefix changes meaning and give at least one correct example from the word list. Teachers can mark each open-ended response as correct or incorrect based on whether the student shows understanding of the prefix meaning and provides a correct example.
