Teacher Notes (not visible to students)

This activity is the first lesson in Pat Cunningham's Making Words program. This follows the lesson format in which students make words, sort words and transfer word patterns to new spelling. The letters in the final word ~ stand ~ allow students practice with phonics patterns -at, -an, -and. Students transfer their knowledge of consonant letter sounds at the beginning of a word. My students will complete this, initially, at home after we've done it in class with manipulatives. My goal is to give students practice with a digital activity that mimics what/how we are learning in person, and to demonstrate for parents the kind of activity that helps with spelling. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.1.2.D Use conventional spelling for words with common spelling patterns and for frequently occurring irregular words. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.1.2.E Spell untaught words phonetically, drawing on phonemic awareness and spelling conventions.
