Rain Experiment

Grades: Kindergarten, Pre-K
Subjects: Art, STEAM, Science

Student Instructions

Let's use the rain to do some experimenting. Gather a variety of different art materials including paint, washable markers, crayons, pencils and any others you can find. On a large piece of paper (white makes the results a little more dramatic but is not necessary), use all of the art materials to create your artwork. Be creative - you can paint and draw anything you like. You will want to use lots of color in your artwork. Take a photo photo of your artwork before you begin your experiment. Now you are ready to begin your experiment. If the weather forecast includes rain, you can put your paper outside (use some rocks or other heavy items to hold your paper down in case it gets windy). Now you need to wait and watch to see what happens when the rain falls on your artwork! If there is not rain in the forecast, you can make your own rain using a spray bottle filled with water or dipping your fingers in a bowl of water and dripping the water on your artwork. What do you notice happening when the rain or water falls on your artwork? Look at each art material you used. Does the water change the colors when you used paint? Does the crayon color change? What about the markers or pencil? Take a photo photo of your artwork after it was in the rain or sprinkled with water. Use the mic microphone to tell me what you noticed happening when the artwork got wet! Click on the check to post your work for me to see.
