Family Why: Phonemic awareness is the foundation for early literacy development. It builds the skills needed for blending, reading, and writing development. We use phonemic awareness as adults when we read new words, quickly read through content, or guess at how words are pronounced.

Students practice making and recognizing the sound in various activities including one they can do with their family or a partner. ####How to Use This Lesson: Assign this lesson to the whole class or individual students who need extra practice with phonemic awareness. Activities can be completed whole group, with a partner, or supported in small-group instruction. ####Materials: Most activities, students can complete with minimal to no supplies.
