Teacher Notes (not visible to students)
This activity guides students from listening and movement to pitched notation and a final recording. It focuses on identifying verse and chorus, reading and performing rhythms with body and untuned percussion, singing solfa (soh, me; and soh, fa, me, re, do), transferring to tuned instruments, and placing rhythms and pitches onto beat circles and the full staff. Use simple xylophones, glockenspiels or classroom tuned bars plus shakers, tambourines or hand drums for untuned percussion. Prepare beat-circle templates and staff paper for students and have one instrument per small group if possible. Use the open-ended multimedia responses to assess students’ ability to perform and show understanding. High-quality answers: clear steady pulse and correct rhythm matching the words; correct solfa syllables for verse and chorus; accurate tapping or playing on tuned instruments matching the pitch ladder; thoughtful reflection when explaining choices. For partner recordings, look for cooperative participation where both students contribute to rhythm and pitch parts.
