This is Day 1 of 2 for these spelling patterns. Day 1 was an open sort, today the students will drill down and look for specific patterns. Demonstrate, Sort, Check and Reflect. This pattern is tricky because the ea pattern is used to spell both the short -e and the long -e sound. Many of the short -e rhyme so make sure you point this out to the students. Day 1 you should have read and discussed the meaning of words, highlight word lead which can be read with both short -e and long -e and discuss term homograph, this word can be sorted in either category. Discuss the shift in sound also shifts the meaning of the word. Highlight that in this sort they are refining the sorts to specific CVC CVVC patterns, inform students that in prior CVVC sorts it was always associated with long-vowel sounds, now they will learn that in some cases the CVVC have the short -e sound.
