(A6) Types of Magnets

There are three different types of magnets: natural, temporary, and permanent. Magnets can be made of iron, steel, nickel or cobalt. Hands-on Activity 1. Natural magnets are rocks with a lot of iron in them. Natural magnets are found in the ground. They are not made in a factory. Investigate natural magnets. a. Observe the rock with a magnifying glass. Do you see the tiny iron bits on the rock? The rock is naturally attracting the iron. b. Prove it is a magnet by attracting a staple. c. Take a video of the natural magnet picking up a staple. d. Take a close-up picture of the rock attracting the staple. 2. Temporary magnets are called that because they only last a short time or when turned on. One type of temporary magnet is an electromagnet. When the electricity is turned on, a strong magnetic field is created and the iron turns into a magnet. Investigate temporary magnets. a. Push the button on the horseshoe magnet. b. Prove it is a magnet by attracting a paperclip. c. By pushing the button, you create a special kind of temporary magnet called an electromagnet. d. Take a video and a picture of the electromagnet holding the paperclip. 3. Permanent magnets are usually made from hard iron or steel. Permanent magnets last a long time. Permanent magnets can weaken when dropped or from age. Permanent magnets are usually made in a factory. Investigate and permanent magnets. a. Take a picture of the permanent magnet at the table. b. Prove it is a magnet by attracting a paperclip. c. Take a video of one of the permanent magnet attracting a paperclip.
