What Cleans Pennies Best? Using the Scientific Method

Instructions for Pupils

You will be a Scientist today and use the Scientific Method to investigate "What Cleans Pennies Best?" You will test a variety of items that you have at home. (Here are some suggested items to test: Lemon or lime juice, Water, Soy sauce, Dish soap, Vinegar, Ginger ale, Ketchup, Salt water, Hot Sauce, Mustard, Milk.) Next, you will put some of each item in a a bowl or cup, enough to cover the penny, then allow it to sit for about 30 minutes. Finally, take the pennies out and wiped each one off on a paper towel. Pay close attention to the surface of the pennies observe any changes and/or which pennies become shinier. When you are finished you can then rinse them with running water and set them on a towel to dry. You will fill the student template out as work your way through the experiment.
