Slope-Intercept discovery activity

Grades: 8th Grade, 9th Grade
Subjects: Math

Student Instructions

On slides 1-4, use the pen, pencil or shapes tools to plot the data from the table of values on the coordinate plane. Analyze the graph of the linear pattern. How is it connected to the given equation? Use the label tool and/or mic tool to answer the observation questions. On the last slide, use the label and/or mic tool to make some logical conclusions. How do you find the rate of change (slope) in a table of values, graph or equation? How do you identify the y-intercept in a table of values, graph or equation? When you have completed the activity and your reflections, click the check to submit your work.

Teacher Notes (not visible to students)

Previous knowledge: This activity is intended to be used after students have discussed slope on a graph and rate of change in a table of values. In this activity, students will be introduced to y-intercept and slope-intercept form a linear equation. Students will make observations using their previous knowledge to make conjectures about how the slope and y-intercept appear in slope-intercept form of a linear equation.
