How is rainbow made? - Mystery Science

Grades: Kindergarten, 1st Grade
Subjects: Science

Student Instructions

1. Watch the video that explains how a rainbow is made. 2. Gather: a clear - plastic cup, blank paper or index card, pitcher (or cup) of water, crayons, clean up supplies. 3. Set your empty cup on the windowsill or on a pile of books. 4. Look at the floor. Can you see the shadow of your cup? If you don’t see your cup’s shadow, move the cup until you do. 5. Add a small amount of water to your cup. As your cup fills, watch for wiggling lines of light. When you see them, put your white paper where those lines are. 6. If you didn’t see any wiggling lines, stir the water with your finger and keep looking. You’ll find them! 7. Wait until the water in the cup is completely still and see what happens to those lines! 8. Now for fun... ○ Can you catch the rainbow colors on a card? ○ Without touching the cup, can you make the colors disappear? ○ Can you make the colors brighter? (Hint: colors made of light are brightest when they are in a shadow.) 9. Complete the worksheet in Seesaw. Label the colors you see!
