Selfie Science: Create a Density Rainbow (Measurement Notebook #9)

Student Instructions

The purpose of this activity is to learn more about the density of liquids. Sugar is a solid that dissolves in water. Sugar changes the density of liquids. The more sugar you add, the greater the density (and more particles). Materials * 5 clear glasses or cups * warm water * sugar * measuring cup * spoon * food coloring Procedures 1. Pour the 1 cup of very warm water into each glass. 2. Put 1 tablespoon of sugar in glass 1. Stir until dissolved. Add red food coloring. 3. Put 2 tablespoons of sugar in glass 2. Stir until dissolved. Add yellow food coloring. 4. Put 3 tablespoons of sugar in glass 3. Stir until dissolved. Add green food coloring. 5. Put 4 tablespoons of sugar in glass 4. Stir until dissolved. Add blue food coloring. 6. Carefully (and slowly) layer the liquids. Take a picture. 7. Use the App of your choice to demonstrate your learning.
