Understanding Shadows

Grades: 3rd Grade
Subjects: Science

Student Instructions

Use the drawing tool to create an illustration. In the illustration, include the sun and another object (like a tree, building, or person). Show how the sun changes position throughout the day AND how that changes the object's shadow. Tap the rec tool to explain how the shadow will change throughout the day.

Teacher Notes (not visible to students)

This activity connects to the following MN state standard in science: 3.2.3.1.2 Explain how shadows form and can change in various ways. Modification: An easy modification to this activity would be to take several photographs of an object throughout the day (rather than sketching). Upload those photos and use the recording tool to explain how the position of the sun changes the object's shadow throughout the day. The photos could be compiled into one picture using an app like Pic-Collage.
