Teacher Notes (not visible to students)

This activity supports students to develop their understanding of part-part-whole relationships through hands-on, visual problem solving. Students represent numbers by splitting them into two or three parts using familiar lunchbox contexts, then record this as a number sentence. Students work through differentiated levels: ⭐ to 10 (2 parts) ⭐⭐ to 20 (2 parts) ⭐⭐⭐ to 20 (3 parts) 🏆 Challenge: choose their own number and partition in different ways 💡 Teaching Focus Encourage students to: physically build or draw their parts check that parts combine to make the whole explore more than one way to make the same number Use questioning such as: “How many in each part?” “Does that make the whole?” “Can you make it a different way?” 🧠 Key Maths Focus Part-part-whole understanding Early addition structure Flexible number thinking (multiple solutions)
