Teacher Notes (not visible to students)

Every syllable contains one vowel sound. The accented syllable is the syllable that is more emphasized when we say the whole word. It is often louder, the sounds are held longer, and it is higher pitched. The unaccented syllable has less emphasis and the vowel often sounds like a short (u). When you hear one medial consonant sound immediately after a short vowel in a two syllable word, double the consonant. This spelling protects the vowel's short sound. Learned words must be memorized because at least one sound spelling is irregular or unreliable.
