Teacher Notes (not visible to students)

Every syllable contains one vowel sound. The accented syllable is the syllable that is more emphasized when we say the whole word. It is often louder, the sounds are held longer, and it is higher pitched. When you hear a long vowel sound in an open, accented syllable, that vowel sound can be reliably spelled by a single vowel. Other sounds may follow in another syllable. 1. hibernate 2. meter 3. apron 4. stipend 5. human 6. unit 7. clover 8. icon 9. siren 10. cubic 11. island 12. ocean 13. people 14. educate 15. horizon 16. superb
