3.13 Hokusai and "The Great Wave" | Culture In Art | Part 1

Grades: 3rd Grade
Subjects: Art

Student Instructions

Hi artists! Today we will begin to learn about the Japanese artist, Hokusai, and how one of his art prints, "The Great Wave Off Kanagawa" has influenced and inspired people from all over the world. As we begin this great art adventure, start thinking about what you like about this art. Is it because of how the wave represents power? Do you like the colors used? Is it the flowing movement of the lines? Is it the fact that it shows the relationship between humanity and nature? As we begin looking into Hokusai's work, consider these things in your own creations as well. 1. Watch the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ijzqw72qTDg 2. Design your own "Great Wave" using the image provided in the Seesaw template. OPTIONS: You can draw directly on the image using the Seesaw drawing tools, download or screenshot the image and upload it to another art app such as Art Studio or Sketchbook), or even draw your own from scratch in your sketchbook. Remember: This is only a sketch where you can prepare and plan out placement of details and your overall idea/theme when you start the final next week. 3. Whatever you decide in doing in terms of creating your own "Great Wave", make sure to post your response here on Seesaw. Next week, we will begin the "final" artwork together. Have fun and MAY THE ARTS BE WITH YOU! Mr. Belonio
