Student Instructions
Very few objects you use are made from only one material with only one property. Most objects you use are made of a combination of materials and have many different properties.
For example, your pencil is made from graphite (the gray part that makes marks on your paper), wood surrounding the graphite, an eraser, and metal to attach the eraser to the wood. Even the eraser isn't made from just one material. It is a combination of pumice, rubber, and other materials. The wooden part of the pencil is quite hard, while the eraser is softer. The wood might be painted yellow, the eraser might be pink, and the graphite might be gray.
For the next 8 days, we are going to learn about how materials with different properties can be combined to create new things.
1. Click the to listen to the book The Most Magnificent Thing.
2. After you listen to the story, click
and tell me about something you might want to create. What materials would you use? What properties would it have? Would it be large, or very small? Heavy or light? Squishy or solid? What color would it be?
3. When you are finished, click
to submit your video to your journal.
"I can combine materials with different properties to create something new."
