Student Instructions

#1 Snowstorm in a Jar 1. Fill a mason jar about 2/3 full with baby oil. 2. In another cup add a small squirt of white paint to about 1/4 cup of water, then stir it until it’s combined. You want the water to be a nice white colour so you can see it in the oil. 3.Pour the white water mixture into the jar. The mixture will fizz up towards the top a little bit when you do the experiment, so don’t fill your jar all the way to the top or you’ll end up with quite a mess. 4.Add some white glitter to the jar. 5. Break up the Alka Seltzer tablet into small pieces, then drop two or three into the jar. The white water bubbles up through the baby oil making a little snowstorm in a jar! #2 Raincloud in a Jar 1.First, mix a few drops of food coloring into some water. Set it aside. This is the “rain”. 2. Fill a glass jar about 3/4 of the way full with cool water. 3.Make a fluffy “cloud” on top of the water using shaving cream. 4. Suck up some of the colored water into a pipette and then gently squirt it on top of our shaving cream cloud. Watch it "rain" #3 Tornado in a jar 1. Fill your jar about 3/4 full with water and add in 3-5 drops of blue food dye (depending on the size of your jar and how dark you want the water to be). 2.Add a teaspoon of dish soap and a teaspoon of vinegar(optional) to your blue water. 3.Tighten your lid. 4. Simply hold the jar by the lid and rotate it around in a circle in a smooth, steady motion with your wrist and watch the vortex form.
