Tell students that for this activity, they will design a zoo enclosure for a polar bear. Introduce polar bears to the students with a brief description of their natural habitat. Please point out the physical and behavioral adaptations of the polar bears to their environment and Arctic climate. Try to show the students pictures of both young and mature animals. Now tell the students the enclosure they will design is for a polar bear in a zoo located in the desert environment of Phoenix, Arizona. Have students compare the two environments. What challenges do they think they will face trying to create an environment that replicates (to the extent possible) the characteristics of the environment for which polar bears are adapted?
