Tennis Ball Tower Challenge

Grades: 5th Grade, 4th Grade

Student Instructions

Students will all use the same materials to build a tower that is both tall and strong. The tower must support a tennis ball for at least 10 seconds. There will be a small prize mailed to the winner's home address!! If you would like to participate in our Tennis Ball Tower Challenge, this is what you do: 1. Build a tower that will support a tennis ball USE ONLY THESE MATERIALS IN YOUR DESIGN: 1 ziploc re-sealable gallon bag 10 small paper (or plastic) cups (no taller than 3.5 inches each) 10 plastic drinking straws (no taller/longer than 9" each) 10 popsicle sticks (or 10 sticks from outside) no taller than 6 inches each 1 roll of scotch tape 1 pair of scissors 1 Tennis ball or other ball ( it must be equivalent in size and weight to a tennis ball) 2. Record yourself when you test your tower. Show yourself measuring the height (up to the top of the ball) and timing this for 10 seconds. 3. The tower must hold the ball for 10 seconds ****The tallest tower that holds the ball for 10 seconds wins! If towers that support the ball are the same height, then the tie-breaker will be the tower with the smallest base is the winner****
