Relating to Peers: Listening to other people's ideas

Grades: 5th Grade, 6th Grade, 7th Grade
Subjects: Character Building, Special Education

Student Instructions

Learning Intention: Listen to and document ideas from another person Sometimes in groups only the speaker is listening to themselves. Others are thinking about what they are going to say and are not really listening. This lesson is an exercise in listening to others' comments. Thinking questions: 1. When you're in a group, are you the only one with good ideas? 2. What's the best way to find out the ideas of other people in the group? 3. How can you tell if someone is listening to you? 4. Why is repeating what someone says a good way to see if you were listening? 5. Can you repeat an idea without using the same exact words? How? Directions: In small groups, discuss topics provided. After listening to the others' comments on the topic, jot down a few notes about ideas that were shared.
