Grades: 2nd Grade
Subjects: Math

Student Instructions

We found this puzzle in our toy chest. Before we put it together, we want to count the pieces to make sure that none are missing. There are supposed to be 1,000 pieces in all! This is how many pieces we’ve counted so far. 1. Select add 2. Follow the directions on each pages 3. Select check when you finish ALL pages. How could you get started? Try using number pieces to show what is happening. You can use the MLC Number Pieces app if you’d like! Think about: How many pieces have they counted so far? Do you see the large pile with 100 pieces? Do you see the small piles with 10 pieces in each pile? How many more pieces do they need to count to get to 1,000? How many groups of 10? How many groups of 100?

Math at Home activities include a variety of math routines that invite students to engage in meaningful mathematical problem solving and discourse. Math at Home activities are provided by The Math Learning Center with support from the Maier Math Foundation. MATH IN OUR WORLD Math in Our World activities invite students to solve problems about math in our homes and the world around them. These problems feature glimpses into other families’ lives. Many of the problem situations can be extended. Students can take it to the next level by writing and solving their own problems about the situation. Take a look at the Reference for Educators for sample student responses for this specific activity. https://mathathome.mathlearningcenter.org/activity/1604 WANT TO LEARN MORE?
