Fungi Spreading Spores

Grades: 6th Grade
Subjects: Science

Student Instructions

In this activity you will build a model of a fruiting body and simulate the distribution of fungi spores. Set-up: Take 10 cotton balls and break them each into very tiny pieces. Insert the cotton ball pieces into a balloon. Inflate the balloon and tie. Tape the knotted end to a stick and stand the stick upright in a can of play-doh. Have one of your team members film this next step. You will only have one chance to do this so make sure everyone is ready before popping the balloon. Get into position to video what happens when the balloon pops. Put on your safety goggles before you pop the balloon with a pin. Post your video to seesaw : First, edit your video in iMovie, explain the fruiting body structure and the distribution of spores. Include in your explanation why fungi are found just about everywhere. Then, export your iMovie directly into seesaw
