Teacher Notes (not visible to students)

This activity introduces tally charts and gives students practice recording and reading tally marks in familiar contexts (favorite fruits, classroom choices). Use a real class poll (hands up or sticky notes) to collect data for the partner activity. Prepare small sticky notes or a set of picture cards (fruit images) for students to sort and tally. For remote lessons, students can draw tally marks on paper or use a simple online whiteboard. High-quality open responses will: show a clear tally chart with groups of five marked correctly, include counts written as numbers, and a short explanation (1-2 sentences) describing how the student got their totals (for example: “I grouped tallies by five, then added the leftover two to get 7”). For partner recordings, look for clear collaboration and the student explaining how they counted groups of five and any leftover marks.
