The retrieval practice process helps pupils (and their teachers) to identify gaps in learning. This is often known as metacognition: an awareness of what you know and what you don’t know (or can’t remember). Retrieval practice involves students recalling something that they've learnt in the past (a reasonable time after the topic has been initially taught to them) and bringing it back to their minds.
