Snow Day Simple Machines

Grades: 3rd Grade, 4th Grade, 5th Grade
Subjects: Science

Student Instructions

Background: A machine is a tool that helps us work. Machines can help us by changing the amount of force needed to move an object or changing the direction of the force. Force is a push or pull that changes the motion or shape of an object. Simple machines have few or no moving parts. The common simple machines are: * Lever * Inclined Plane * Wedge * Screw * Wheel and Axle * Pulley As you are out in the snow today, think about the simple machines that can help you. Here are some examples of snow day simple machines (but there are lots of ideas!) Ex1. What simple machine will help you clear a path to walk on? Ex2. What simple machine can help you build a snow man bigger than you? Ex3. What simple machine could help you move snowballs to a fort and prep for a snow battle? Directions: Use the pages to show off your knowledge of simple machines. Take a photo, drawing a picture, make a video, or mic examples of as many snow day simple machines that you can find, create, and/or use. Try and find at least 1 example of each type of simple machine (but if you don't find an example, delete the slide). Bonus points if you can find multiple examples or methods to show the simple machines in use in the snow. Have a great snow day!
