Palacio, is a book about a ten-year-old boy named August who was born with a facial abnormality, called Treacher Collins syndrome, a rare facial deformity that's required dozens of surgeries during his first decade of life. The cover image on the book communicates Auggie's feelings of being stared at, as well as the idea that he is looking out at a new world as he is going to school for the first time.
