Subjects: English Language Arts, Home Learning, Reading

Student Instructions

Click the picture of the snow cream link to see a quick video about how to make and eat REAL snow cream! *FRESH snow or crushed ice is required, fresh snow has the best consistency* Here is the link to the blogpost. Under the heading, click "jump to recipe" to skip down to view the functional text. Remember, a recipe is a functional text because it's a special kind of short nonfiction that helps you do something in everyday life with a few steps to follow. Here is the link link: https://www.gimmesomeoven.com/how-to-make-snow-ice-cream-recipe/ Read the recipe (functional text) with a grownup. Gather your ingredients. Share a video or photos of you showing how to make and enjoy snow cream, and if you changed any of the ingredients (food coloring, different flavor besides vanilla, chocolate chips, etc). Pro tip: If you have enough fresh, clean snow, you may want to save it in a clean, portable gallon drink container in your freezer so you can make more later after the snow outside melts away!

Teacher Notes (not visible to students)

I grew up in Northeastern PA (NEPA) but moved to Va Beach after I got married about 16 years ago. I mention this because in Pennsylvania we have snow every single winter, it is a normal part of growing up in the north or midwest. However, living down in the south, I can now only recall a handful of winters here with snowfall that accumulated enough to play in or call for a real snow day from school! When they happened, other teachers and neighbors told me about flushing ice cubes down the toilet the night before snow was predicted and wearing pjs inside out (NEVER did that either in NEPA!), but they also mentioned this crazy "cool" dessert made from fresh snow, Snow Cream. My 2nd graders have been learning about functional text as part of our nonfiction unit so this was just perfect timing, two birds with one stone (3 if you count it as social emotional wellness!). Well, as I type this, it's late January 2021 in Va Beach and after almost 2 years without significant snowfall, we woke up to several wonderful inches!! Of course I had to share this recipe with my 2nd graders and their families! We are virtual, but my heart was so happy when half my class came to Zoom with either a mug of hot cocoa or a bowl of fresh snow cream. Their videos and photos will be something we all remember for years to come, thanks to Seesaw! Enjoy!
