Teacher Notes (not visible to students)
This activity guides second graders through listening for and identifying the four main dynamic markings: piano (p), mezzo piano (mp), mezzo forte (mf), and forte (f). Use the embedded video as the central text. The three drag-and-drop pages give quick checks of listening and symbol recognition. The two open-response pages invite students to reflect and demonstrate with audio or drawing so you can assess expressive understanding and control. Prepare a simple classroom instrument (xylophone, keyboard, or small drum) or use your voice so students can try each dynamic after the video. For each open-ended prompt, a high-quality answer names a dynamic and gives a clear example or demonstration (e.g., ‘‘I learned mp means medium soft. I played a quiet xylophone note for mp’’), or shows a thoughtful question about when to use a dynamic. For the show-it multimedia task, a strong response demonstrates contrast between at least two dynamics (soft vs. loud) using voice or instrument. Teachers will manually mark open responses correct/incorrect based on whether students correctly identify and demonstrate dynamics and provide a relevant question or reflection.
