Multiplying a Fraction by a Whole Number - Part 3: Choose your Strategy

Grades: 5th Grade
Subjects: Math

Student Instructions

We have learned how to use two very different strategies to multiply fractions with whole numbers. Today we will practice the strategies we've learned focusing on picking the best strategy for the situation. One of the awesome things about math is that there are often MANY ways to think about a certain problem and solve it. As mathematicians it's important to know a concept deeply enough that we can be flexible in how we figure something out. It is often the case that different strategies are more efficient at different times. Today's lesson will focus on WHEN to use a certain strategy. Below are the tutorials from the last couple of days. You can refer to then to remind you of either of the strategies. Watch the tutorial 2. Do each page of the activity - showing your work and making sure to mark which strategy you used. 3. THE LAST PAGE IS OPTIONAL (Try it out though! It challenges you to think about how to use your strategies differently!)
