Teacher Notes (not visible to students)

This activity can be done independently or teacher led. Read the story and then have the students draw a picture of the vase and flowers for something concrete. Students could also embellish the drawing and make it more than it is. Another option is to have the students draw the vase and and flowers on paper before reading the book. Talk about how they felt while trying to draw. Were they frustrated? Was it easy or hard? Then read the book and talk about how Ramon felt throughout the story and what made his feelings change. After reading the book, ask the students how they feel about their drawing now. Does it feel "vase-ish" enough for them? (If you have read "The Dot" by Peter H Reynolds, you could ask them if they feel like they could do it better. If they do they can draw a new one on the back side of their paper.)
