Hard C /k/ vs Soft C /s/

Grades: 2nd Grade, Kindergarten, 1st Grade
Subjects: Reading

Student Instructions

The letter “c” has two sounds- a “hard” and a “soft” sound. If the letter after the “c” is i, e, or y the “c” makes the /s/ sound (soft sound). If it’s any other letter, the “c” makes the /k/ sound (hard sound). The hard sound of “c” occurs most often. In this activity you will be sorting words into categories - hard or soft. Tap add to begin the activity. Use the move tool to select and move words into the correct column. Use the highlighter tool to highlight the /k/ or /s/ sound in words that have both a hard and a soft "c". When you have finished the activity tap draft if you haven't finished and need to come back later, or check if you are ready to add the completed activity to your Journal.

Teacher Notes (not visible to students)

I created this activity to accompany the Better Start Literacy Approach, Week 15: hard and soft "c" learning activities. It should be assigned after a focus session with the teacher where discussion of the /k/ and /s/ sound of the grapheme "c".
